WARNING: Alt Deletions (NO MORE ALT* or ALT. NAMES)
«: August 02, 2007, 12:24:50 PM»
Dear FAM Community,

The alt list will be purged of all duplicate alts. This means any alts beginning or ending with *. ., or any other symbol will be removed from the database. If you own the alt which has been deleted it is your responsibility to get in contact with the owner, through private message or otherwise and ask them remove the original alt so you can add it to your own list. You can check the recent forum activity of a member by following these instructions. However, it only takes into account whether they have posted on the forums.

If the owner does not seem to be active or respond (you can see if they read a private message by checking your Private Message Outbox) then you can turn to the Questions and Support - Alt Removals forum for administrative alt removal.

A final note of warning: All newly added alts will be deleted on sight if they are duplicates. Please follow the beginning instructions on how to add the alt to your list. Thank you.

Thank goodness. It gets REALLY annoying to see those types of alts listed when doing a search for a specific alt.

agreed. something like this was really needed.

also what about purging inactive and unnecessary account names? lots of people have made accounts and either a) never used them. have no forum posts or any lists. or b) have accounts they were once active on, but then died. and have been dead for simply ages. it seems this type of stuff uses needed space and copious amounts of bandwidth that shouldn't be sucked out because people are too lazy to participate. especially there are names people want that were taken and are not being used. this may be something beneficial and could prove useful as well.

Didn't they already do a pruning for inactive accounts not long ago?

Well, as long as they have atleast a couple of alts listed, it should really be that big of a deal.  The ones that don't have anything listed, I can agree on being pruned.

We can only determine the activity of an account based on 4 factors:

1) The account is activated.
2) The account has made posts on the forums.
3) The account has alts listed.
4) The account has alts wanted.

Is the account is active (1) and has done any of the other three (2, 3, or 4) it is considered active.

so if an account has a wanted list, or has made one forum post, but hasn't been activated since, it's considered active? even if it's been pretty much dead for ages? because there are tons of accounts like this.

is there any way to tell when an account that hasn't made any forum posts or has no alt list was active last? because honestly, i think possibly abandoned accounts or abandoned accounts are wasting space that may name fam run smoother. just a suggestion though.

I gave you my answer to how we can determine activity. With the current forum system we cannot determine it any other way. With FAMv4 this will change.

ouuh i see i see. because purging accounts that have been dead for a certain period of time may aid in the freeing of space and smoother run of the site. hopefully creative gets v4 up soon. :\

I would like to propose an idea for alt listing. Since some people may want to have duplicate names to show that perhaps the alt is shared, or they just want to make sure the description of the alt is read, maybe there can be special official marks to show what the status of that alt is. Say the alt is just a duplicate, we can do the normal * mark. If the alt is shared, put a period. If the person would like the alt's description to be read have a ! or a ~?

Just throwing out an idea since I currently am trying my best to handle the whole duplicate alt thing, and I've accidently deleted a couple that I thought were duplicates but were infact the reasons I listed above.

For now an idea like that would work, if FAM v4 ever gets done the new list will account for these things.

For those who are wondering why their alts are going missing off their lists, this is why.

When we see it, we will delete it.

PLEASE ask us to remove them instead of trying to get around that. We, as Mauser said, do not bite, and posting a thread in Q&A takes only a few seconds of your time. It saves a lot of confusion.

<: Thanks guys.

I'm only mean out of necessity.

due to the fact that i've had to delete over 25 alts from people's lists just this evening, i am moving this from a topic up to an announcement. :? as always, if any other member(s) of the moderation team feels this is improper, feel free to revoke the change.
