Employment Rates Plummeting - Are You Employed?

I'm having the hardest time trying to get a job for the past couple months.

I was working for an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) company for two months, where I was soon layed off due to the company downsizing.

I have now been unemployed for 2 months, and have been actively searching within those two months. I've fillied out approx. 40 (yes, 40) job applications, sometimes submitted to the same place twice, had roughly 10-15 interviews, and all have been to no avail.

I just recently received a call from a company I really wanted to work at, saying they were just going to work with someone already on the team.

I applied at a friend's work. If they had the money, they would hire me.

It seems I'm unemployed for the same reoccurring reason: Companies are afraid to hire.

It doesn't help that I live in Michigan, one of, if not, THE worst place for the job market right now. I'm surprised I'm the only one of my friends who is unemployed.

So this is what I want to ask the folks of FAM: How many of you are employed? How long did it take of searching before you got the job? Did you have connections in order to get into the business? Any tips on getting a job?

I used to work for LAUSD here in Los Angeles but I was laid off because the school district's budget wouldn't allow anymore people (not including those who were there longer than I was) with the after-school programs.

At the moment, I'm volunteering with the 39th district assembly of my county, but I'm hoping to snag a full-time job there or (hopefully) at a veterinary clinic &/or shelter. I love animals more than I love humans, lol.

Unfortunately, most shelters & rescues take only volunteers, and depending on how well you work there, they'll hire you but it takes time & patience. I was considering working at a dog/animal pound and be hired by the county, but I don't know if I'd be able to euthanize an animal without feeling some sort of remorse or guilt.

My girlfriend had to search for almost 6 months before getting a job in her field. She has a degree as a Vet Tech, but couldn't find a company to hire her. She finally lucked out and found a single vet practice that was looking to expand that took her in.

I myself have been employed with the same employer for over 3.5 years. However, I wish the job market was better so I could leave. I really hate my job and the stress levels I have to endure there. It's a solo practice law firm in which the lawyer is kind of an asshole who does a lot of yelling.

Sounds like my boytoy's previous job, he worked at a solo practice law firm as head computer tech. He ended up quitting because his asshole boss (who also yells a lot) tended to look down on him and speak lowly to him because he didn't have a college/uni degree and wasn't attending at the time.

Which is funny, because if he wanted to, he could of knocked his boss down a few pegs but I guess you'd call it assault.

Now he's been bouncing from job to job while he figures out his financial situation with attending UBC & dealing with getting laid off twice because of companies downsizing, at the moment he works at his second-cousin's Italian restaurant as head chef. At least he's doing something that he likes now.

Sounds a lot like the last place I worked. All our boss would do is bitch about how much he hates this client, that client, etc. etc. His favorite word was the F bomb and whenever I'm not there, my friend tells me about all the sexist jokes they make.

I'm glad your girlfriend found somewhere to work, and my dad was having a situation a lot like yours. Couldn't find anywhere to work from beyond the company he resigned from. He did find some place though, but now he needs to wait until they schedule him time to work.

I just filled out 3 applications today, so hopefully I'll be hearing back from somewhere soon too. It's just really tough right now, and the stress of being unemployed and having bills is starting to get to me.

I ended up getting a seasonal (halloween season) job along with my brother and his girlfriend pretty easily since my bro is on great terms with the guy who runs the haunted place. Sadly I am back to an unemployed highschool student as of yesterday when the job ended.  I fucking loved that job. ):< I'm doing it again next year

My boyfriend has had shitty luck finding employment for months and recently got hired as a seasonal employee at sears... after my seasonal job ended lol

I'll probably hold off on searching for another job unless I can walk there or I have a guarenteed ride to and from. I can't drive and unfortunately if I did walk it'd have to be a dayshift on account of I'm "little" (5'0") and my family and boyfriend will spazz out if I walk anywhere by myself.  I swear they think 10 guys in broad daylight with traffic going by will pop out of nowhere and assault me.
I rarely log in. Only contact me if serious about purchasing my stuff.

I've been working at the same place for a little over a year. Getting the job then wasn't hard since the economy wasn't as bad as it is now. Unfortunately, while I'd love to go somewhere else, finding a better paying job is not going so well.

Not to mention, as soon as I asked them about my benefits they cut my hours so that I was no longer eligible. I just recently got them back up to what I need, but now I'm afraid if I ask for my health insurance again, they'll cut me back.

i was honorably discharged from the air force back in late-august, and have filled out an application to every single place within 30 miles from my house, and I'm sure it's added up to over 50.
not a single response from any of the places, and i'm a veteran with a very positive work and personal history. it's damn near impossible to get a job. i've been to the unemployment office, who matched me up with two other places, who also hire vets before anyone else- they also have not responded at all to my application aside from sending me a letter some time ago to say they got it. i did have a 'job' working for my neighbors for a short time, but they're no longer in need of my help.
this friday there will be a veteran job-fair near here, so hopefully i'll be able to land a job there... if not, i don't know what i'm going to do. only other option is to hit up the unemployment office again, but this time to request money. i hate the idea, but i don't know what else to do. you need money to live, and no places within a reasonable distance are hiring for any positions.

I'm almost in the same boat.  I was medically discharged from the Army back in March and have vet status as well; I don't have a long work history, but I ended up getting stuck in a lot of jobs where I suffered harassment issues from employees and managers, but I still did a good job.

I've been putting in applications for awhile now, trying to find any kind of job but I can't find a damn thing.  Because of my injuries, I'm not allowed to do the general crap either like heavy lifting or standing for long hours, so that narrows my options even more.  It's ridiculous.

I applied then got hired next week, $9/hour, and $10/hour on sundays

Then again I'm working hours almost no one will work, night shift so that may be why I was hired so fast, and with no previous experience or connections.

Not bad for first job and such, cept one of my managers like hates me and like is always harassing me on how i do my job when i do better than 90% of other employees. Must learn some voodoo stuff to get rid of her, srsly.

I was working for my last year of High School to help gather up enough money to head to college as well as pay for gas back and forth to school (since my school bus came at outrageous times in the morning).
I had to quit last year in September due to the fact that my college hours were going to conflict with my scheduled hours to work and the fact that it would be around a 60 mile drive to get there from campus.

I've applied at about 10 places close to the school over the last year. Only one place was interested in me, but working as a Barn Assistant isn't that impressive on a job application xD; The only place that wanted me was a horse tack store, though that fell through. I recently found another place and I'm turning in my application today. They are hiring temp positions for the holiday season, which would be fine for me to work, I could at least have a little bit more money, but they said they were only hiring one or two more people for the positions. *crosses fingers* Dx I have classes to pay for.

I have a government job with the local library so the job security there is pretty good. Unfortunately I work short hours so I had to take up a secondary job to cover bills.

ugh job hunting sucks fucking ass.

now is probably the best time to look for a job because it's the holiday season. i just recently got employed after searching for months and months with no luck.

try going for one of those stores where people would go to buy christmas presents.

I went to every store in the mall looking for holiday work, had three interviews and only 1 callback that I made, and the guy pretty much told me "Your hours suck but you'll have to do if we don't find anyone else." ]: I also applied at the Hospital here where my step mom and my best friend work, but nothing from there either. I might give them a call next week.

Either way, I'm still trying but god finding a job sucks, even during the holiday season.

aw man. it is hard. i must have put in like 10 applications when i was actively looking (not during the holiday season) i got one call back from a sneaker store, had two interviews there and then never heard a word back.

then again, it does depend on whos interviewing you as well. and your school status, and job experience.

the place that just hired me.. well.. they didnt ask many questions. one or two, and then said, "alright, where to put you." so i guess the only advice i can give you is try looking for a laid back place or hope that you get interviewed by someone who doesn't really care and just needs to hire people lol. they hired like, 15 seasonals recently... it all depends on where you look.

oh yeah, another word of advice is, get the place's numbers where you're applying. i got my first couple interviews because i wouldn't leave them the fuck alone like WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GONNA CALL MEEEEE
so, i'd like nag the shit out of them twice a week or less, so they know you really want the job and they have to give it to you or you wont stop stalking them. :)

Every where I've gone has pretty much said "Oh sorry, we've hired everyone we need ):" Which sucks since I've been throwing out applications since well before Halloween.

The only good thing about my college is my teacher runs a print shop (I'm in printing and graphic design) and there are several printing shops around the area I live. She knows everyone in the area so as long as we do good work she puts in a good word for us at these shops.

I can't find work.

I couldn't find it in England, and I can't find it in Canada.

This is mildly distressing because I need to be employed in order to sponsor my spouse while his papers go through immigration.

i've gone to a few places and filled out applications for a part-time holiday worker. never got a call back. finding work is especially hard since i'm unfortunately picky, and this is my first job, so the places i go to fill apps out in want experienced workers and blah blah blah

but now even if i DO get an interview date i have to wait until my foot heals to acutally work. what a bitch
